| Divine Right | The belief that government or rulers are directly established by God |
| Puritanical | Of or relating to Puritans |
| Mudslinging | Attempt to ruin an opponent's reputation with insults |
| Incumbent | The official currently holding a public office |
| Appeasement | Foreign policy of pacifying an aggrieved country through negotiation to prevent war |
| Plutocratic | A political system governed by the wealthy people |
| Platform | The declared policy of a political party or group |
| Mandate | A document giving an official instruction or command |
| Denomination | Identifying word or words by which someone or something is called and classified from others |
| Temperance | The moderation or abstention in the use of alcohol |
| Favorite Sons | A politician whose electoral appeal derives from their native state, rather than their political views is called a “favorite son” |
| Polygamy | The practice of marriage by a man to multiple wives |
| Theocracy | Rule by God; Applied to a state where religious leaders exercise direct or indirect political authority |
| Utopian | An attempt by cooperative communities to improve life in the face of increasing industrialism |
| Eugenics | Study of factors that influence the hereditary qualities of the human race and ways to improve those qualities |
