Social Issues

TermDefinition
Corruption Illegal, bad, or dishonest behaviour, especially by people in positions of power.
Curfew A rule that everyone must stay at home between particular times, usually at night, especially during a war or a period of political trouble.
Demonstration An occasion when a group of people march or stand together to show that they disagree with or support something or someone.
Gang A group of young people, especially young men, who spend time together, often fighting with other groups and behaving badly.
Go on strike To stop working to demonstrate.
Health care The services provided by a country or an organization that involve caring for people's health and treating people who are ill.
Homelessness The state of being without a home.
Inequality The unfair situation in society when some people have more opportunities, money, etc. than other people.
Juvenile deliquency Behaviour of a young person that is illegal or not acceptable to most people.
Low wedges The low amount of money that is paid, usually every week, to an employee.
Overcome To defeat or succeed in controlling or dealing with something.
Prejudice An unfair and unreasonable opinion or feeling, especially when formed without enough thought or knowledge.
Refugee A person who has escaped from their own country for political, religious, or economic reasons or because of a war.
Slum A very poor and crowded area, especially of a city.
Support a cause To agree with and give encouragement to someone or something because you want him, her, or it to succeed.
Take action To do something.
Unemployment The number of people who do not have a job that provides money.
Wealth A large amount of money or valuable possessions that someone has.
Welfare Programme help given, especially by the state or an organization, to people who need it, especially because they do not have needs.
