| Federalism | the power of the government is divided between the central government of a country and state governments of a country |
| Limited Government | a constitutional principle that ensures the government powers are limited by the rule of law |
| Checks and Balances | a constitutional principle that gives each branch of government the ability to limit the power of other branches |
| Individual Rights | personal freedoms and liberties of the people which are guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and U.S. Laws |
| Popular Sovereignty | The idea that the power of the government is created and continued by the permission of its people |
| Separation of Powers | a Constitutional principle that divides power among different branches of government to prevent any branch from becoming too powerful |
| Republicanism | a form of government in which the people exercise their power by voting for political representatives |
| Legislative Branch | writes the law |
| Executive Branch | enforces the law |
