TermDefinition
Federalism the power of the government is divided between the central government of a country and state governments of a country
Limited Government a constitutional principle that ensures the government powers are limited by the rule of law
Checks and Balances a constitutional principle that gives each branch of government the ability to limit the power of other branches
Individual Rights personal freedoms and liberties of the people which are guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and U.S. Laws
Popular Sovereignty The idea that the power of the government is created and continued by the permission of its people
Separation of Powers a Constitutional principle that divides power among different branches of government to prevent any branch from becoming too powerful
Republicanism a form of government in which the people exercise their power by voting for political representatives
Legislative Branch writes the law
Executive Branch enforces the law
Judicial Branch interprets the law
Legislative Branch The U.S. Congress (House and Senate) is part of this branch.
Executive Branch The President and Vice President are part of this branch.
Judicial Branch The U.S. Supreme Court is part of this branch.

Rule of Law someone or something is following the laws and applying them to all people equally, even the powerful. No one is above the law, not even the president of the United States.
Bill of Rights The first ten amendments, or changes made to the U.S. Constitution.
