Product A substance produced in a reaction
Reactant A substance present at the start of the reaction
Subscript Tells you how many of each type of element is present in a compound. Small number after the element symbol
Diatomic Molecule A molecule that contains two atoms. (These are also known as the Super Seven, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, I2, H2.)
Balanced Equation Each side of the equation has the same number of atoms of each element and mass is conserved
Coefficients Small whole numbers that are placed in front of the formulas in an equation in order to balance it
Combination Reaction A chemical change in which two or more substances react to form a single new substance. (A+B=AB) Also known as a composition or synthesis reaction
Decomposition Reaction A chemical change in which a single compound breaks down into two or more simpler products. (AB=A+B)
Combustion Reaction A chemical change in which an element or compound reacts with oxygen. Always involves oxygen as a reactant. The other reactant is an organic compound. The reactants always produce carbon dioxide and water. (CxHxOx+O2=CO2+H2O)
Single Replacement Reaction A chemical change in which one element replaces a second element in a compound. (AB+C+AC+B)
Double Replacement Reaction A chemical change involving an exchange of positive ions between two compounds. A compound reaction with another compound, producing two new compounds. (AB+CD=AD+CB)
