Chemical Reactions
vocab 4
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Product | A substance produced in a reaction |
Reactant | A substance present at the start of the reaction |
Subscript | Tells you how many of each type of element is present in a compound. Small number after the element symbol |
Diatomic Molecule | A molecule that contains two atoms. (These are also known as the Super Seven, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, I2, H2.) |
Balanced Equation | Each side of the equation has the same number of atoms of each element and mass is conserved |
Coefficients | Small whole numbers that are placed in front of the formulas in an equation in order to balance it |
Combination Reaction | A chemical change in which two or more substances react to form a single new substance. (A+B=AB) Also known as a composition or synthesis reaction |
Decomposition Reaction | A chemical change in which a single compound breaks down into two or more simpler products. (AB=A+B) |
Combustion Reaction | A chemical change in which an element or compound reacts with oxygen. Always involves oxygen as a reactant. The other reactant is an organic compound. The reactants always produce carbon dioxide and water. (CxHxOx+O2=CO2+H2O) |
Single Replacement Reaction | A chemical change in which one element replaces a second element in a compound. (AB+C+AC+B) |
Double Replacement Reaction | A chemical change involving an exchange of positive ions between two compounds. A compound reaction with another compound, producing two new compounds. (AB+CD=AD+CB) |
