What does annexation mean? the forcible acquisition of territory
what are some causes of imperialism? rapid industrialization, economic growth, nationalism, urbanization, want better military
what was the Monroe Doctrine? foreign policy that opposed European Imperialism in the west
who did the US buy Alaska from? From Russians for $7.2 million
what did Alaska have that the US wanted? natural resources such as minerals, oils and timber
why were the Hawaiian islands important to the US? sugar industry
what does yellow journalism mean? newspaper sought to increase circulation by sensationalizing news stories
why were the rough riders? volunteer regiment led by teddy Roosevelt fought with many African American regiments and had victories that paved the way for a quick end to the war
what does protectorate mean? a country whose affairs are partially controlled by a stronger nation
what was the Big Stick Diplomacy? a policy of negotiation supported by the unspoken threat of a powerful military
what was the " Le Dome Letter " ? letter that the Spanish ambassador called the president weak in
what happened during the USS Maine Explosion? American battleship visiting Cuba, blown up, killed 260 Americans
What were the US given after the Spanish American war? Guam and Puerto Rico
After Cuba created their own constitution, what did the US insist on? adding multiple provisions to the constitution called the Platt Amendment
what was the result of the Platt Amendment? creation of a US military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
what were the main parts in the Philippine American war? mad when US excluded them from peace negotiations with Spain, received independence in the end
who denied the Panama Canal? Columbia, since they owned the land at the time
What did the US do after being denied to build the Canal? revolted and fought for it to go up which led to Panama giving permission to the US
what is the open door policy? called for open access for all of Chinas ports
what were the main thing about ports? foreign nation retains exclusive rights over trade, mines, rails and more
what were some pros for American Imperialism? gained resources and created an empire, US became a political world power
what were some of the cons for American Imperialism? did not extend rights to non-Americans, took away the right of self determination
