| Term | Definition |

| Juxtaposition | the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect |
| Paradox | a seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true. |
| Motif | a distinctive feature or dominant idea in an artistic or literary composition |
| Mood | a temporary state of mind or feeling |
| Tone | the general character or attitude of a place, piece of writing, situation, etc. |
| Ambiguity | the quality of being open to more than one interpretation; inexactness |
| Direct Characterization | a method of describing the character in a straightforward manner |
| Indirect Characterization | a type of literary device that reveals details about a character without stating them explicitly |
| Allusion | an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference. |
| Didactic | intended to teach, particularly in having moral instruction as an ulterior motive. |
| Parable | a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the Gospels |
| Point of view | a particular attitude or way of considering a matter |
| Rising Action | all the events that happen in a story on the way to the climax |
| Climax | the most intense, exciting, or important point of something; a culmination or apex. |
| Resolution | a firm decision to do or not to do something |
