Poetry Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Stanza | A unified group of lines in poetry. This is often marked by spacing between sections of the poem. |
| Rhyme | The repetition of the same or similar sounds. |
| Rhyme Scheme | The pattern formed by the rhyming words at the end of lines. |
| Quatrain | A stanza in a poem that has exactly four lines. |
| Couplet | Two lines that rhyme, but they also often have the same meter, or rhythmic structure in a verse or line. |
| Meter | The measured arrangement of sounds/beats in a poem, including the poet’s placement of emphasis and the number of syllables per line. |
| Rhythm | The recurrence of stressed and unstressed sounds in poetry. Depending on how sounds are arranged, the _____ of a poem may be fast or slow, choppy or smooth. |
| Verse | A single line of poetry. |
| Graphical Elements | Uses punctuation and capitalization to create meaning or add effect in poetry. Also the poem may be represented through visuals. |
