Ecosystems flashcards

TermDefinition
What is an organism? a living thing (like a plant or animal)
Something in the environment that is not alive is called a _______________. nonliving factor
All of the organisms and nonliving factors interacting in a certain area make up a/an _________________. ecosystem
All of the sloths that live in the same rainforest are an example of a _______________. population
What is a community? all of the different populations of species living in one place at the same time
What is a habitat? the place where an organism lives
What are some things that a habitat provides? food, water, shelter, and space
What does the size of an organisms's habitat depends on? the organism's needs
Each organism has its own role in the ecosystem. This is known as its _________. niche
How many kinds of organisms can share the exact same niche? None. Every species has its own unique niche.
When does an organism's niche change? An organisms's niche changes as it moves through its life cycle.
What are two main ways that populations interact in a community? They compete (for resources, mates, etc.) and they cooperate to meet basic needs.
What passes from one organism to another in a community? energy
What does a food chain show? A food chain shows the flow of energy in a community.
What do the arrows in a food chain point to? the organisms doing the eating (or getting the energy)
What are the basic parts of a food chain (in order)? the sun, producer, consumer, decomposer
Where do all ecosystems first get their energy? the sun
A _____________ is a plant that uses energy from the sun to make its own food. producer
What is a consumer? An animal that gets its energy by eating other animals and/or plants
What part of the food chain does a mushroom represent? a decomposer
Why are decomposers important in an ecosystem? Decomposers break down plants and dead animals, returning energy to the earth.
How is a food web different than a food chain? A food web shows how many different food chains are connected.
If something happens to one organism in a food web, it might affect the rest because they are all ____________________. interconnected
What is a dichotomous key used for? It helps us classify organisms based on their physical characteristics.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
