5th grade Vocab

Commonly used 5th grade terms

TermDefinition
Short Constructed Response (SCR) A typed answer that is usually a couple of sentences- RACE
Extended Constructed Response (ECR) A typed answer that includes all parts of the RACES strategy
Reveals shows
Author The person that wrote the story/selection
Plot series of events that happen in the story
Italics OR Italicize slanted words authors use to make a word stand out
Figurative Language used to make stories more interesting (ex: similes, metaphors, idioms, onomatopoeia, alliteration, personification, hyperbole)
Similes A comparison using the words "like" or "as". (Ex: The arctic air was as cold as ice when I opened the door. )
Emphasize to show the importance of a word the authors use bold, italicized, or other changes to the word
ECR Extended Constructed Response
SCR Short Constructed Response
Imagery describing using our senses (sight, touch, smell, taste, sound)
Rewrite to write again
Prop used in a play (Ex: hat, suitcase, books, cardboard cutouts, etc)
Scene a section of a play when scenes change, the setting will too
Quotation Marks " " these are used around words that are spoken by a character (Ex: "Hi")
RACES strategy R- Restate A- Answer C- Cite E- Explain
Combine Sentences to put two sentences together into one sentence
Off Topic a sentence that is not about the topic of the story (Ex: A sentence that talks about cats when the story was about dogs is off topic)
P.O.V. point of view
Conclude to gather based on the details or come to a conclusion- similar to an inference
Role job
Selection the WHOLE story
Most likely reason the best reason
Drama play
Summary stating the main events that happened in the story IN ORDER
Dialogue the lines of the character (their speaking part in the drama/play)
First-person point of view In writing, the first person P.O.V. uses the pronouns "I", "me", or "us", or "we" in order to tell a story from the narrator's perspective
Third- person point of view In writing, the third person P.O.V. uses the pronouns "he", "she", "they", "them" in order to tell a story
