Absorption Passage of materials through villi into the blood
Amylase Enzyme secreted by the pancreas to digest starch
Emulsification Process of breaking up large fat globules
Glucose Simple sugar
Fatty Acids Substances produced when fats are digested
Peristalsis Contractions of the gastrointestinal tubes
Lipase Pancreatic enzyme necessary to digest fats
Portal Vein Blood vessel bringing blood to the liver from the small intesting
Hydrochloric acid Chemical produced by the stomach to aid digestion
Glycogen Starch, stored sugar in the liver
Protease Enzyme that digests proteins
Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) Ring of muscles between the esophagus and the stomach
Pyloric Sphincter Ring of muscles between the antrum and the duodenum
Parotid Gland Salivary gland by the ear
Submandibular Gland Salivary gland by the jaw
Sublingual Gland Salivary gland under the tongue
Mastication Chewing
Rugae Ridges on the hard palate and stomach
Triglycerides Large fat molecules
Duodenum The beginning of the small intestines
Jejunum The middle of the small intestines
Ileum The third part of the small intestines
Gallbladder Small sack under the liver that stores bile
Esophagus Tube connecting the pharynx to the stomach
Fundus The top of the stomach
Stomach Body The middle part of the stomach
Antrum The bottom of the stomach
Pharynx The throat

Choledochojejunostomy Opening between the common bile duct and the jejunum
Mesentary Double fold peritoneum that holds the organs in place by securing them to the back of the abdomen

Omentum A part of the mesentery that hangs like an apron over the intestines
Common Bile Duct Bile vessel that transports bile from the liver and gallbladder to the duodenum
