| Ode | Formal lyric poem that celebrates life, intense emotion, personal crisis. Stanza forms vary |
| Pastoral | Nature/Country, romanticize rural life in the natural word |
| Sonnet | "little song," 14 lines, variable line scheme, single idea with clarification or turn of thought in concluding lines |
| Petrarchan Sonnet | Perfected by Italian poet Petrarch, 14 lines divided into two sections, stanza 1 rhyme =ABBA ABBA stanza 2 = CDCDCD or CDEEDE |
| English (Shakespearean) Sonnet | 1 stanza (3 quatrains, 1 couplet), ABAB CDCD EFEF GG |
