Observations, Inferences, Variables and Hypothesis

| What is an observation? | Information obtained through the senses |
| What is an inference? | Interpretation based on evidence and prior knowledge |
| What is an independent variable? | The factor that the scientist is changing in an investigation |
| What is a dependent variable? | The factor that the scientist measures after the change in an experiment |
| What is a controlled variable? | The factors in an experiment that stays the same |
| What is a hypothesis? | An educated guess about what will happen in an investigation |
| What are the three words that need to be included in a hypothesis? | If...then...because |
| What are qualitative observations? | Observations that describe the characteristics of what we observe (L for looks) |
| What are quantative observations? | Observations based on measurements that use N-numbers and tools |
| What is a control group? | Group that does not receive any treatment or changes in an experiment that is used for comparison purposes |
| What is an experimental group? | Group that does receive treatment or change during an experiment. |
