popular culture cultural traits such as dress, diet, and music that identify and are part of today's changeable, urban-based, media-influenced, western societies
language our spoken, written, or signed words and the ways we combine them to communicate meaning
polyglot a speaker of many languages
religion a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny
ethnic group Group of people who share common ancestry, language, religion, customs- strong feelings of group identity
race historically defined by physical characteristics, typically skin color
ethnic geography The study of diffusion, migration and mixing of peoples of different origins
multiculturalism promotes including minority groups in political and social institutions
ethnocentric approach understanding of another's culture from the observers point of view
cultural relativism not judging a culture but trying to understand it on its own terms
physical landscape The visible non-man-made features of an area
placelessness the loss of uniqueness of place in the cultural landscape so that one place looks like the next
modernistic architecture orderly and functional style of building design
postmodern architecture has a flair for drama and being noticeable
sequent occupancy the notion that successive societies leave their cultural imprints on a place, each contributing to the cumulative cultural landscape
sacred spaces Areas or places of religious or spiritual significance.

placemaking The deliberate shaping of an environment to facilitate social interaction and improve a community's quality of life.

pidgin language When parts of two or more languages are combined in a simplified structure and vocabulary
creole A pidgin language that evolves to the point at which it becomes the primary language of the people who speak it

lingua franca a language used among speakers of different languages for the purposes of trade and commerce

imperialism A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
colonialism the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.
genocide Deliberate extermination of a racial or cultural group
time-space convergence rate at which places move closer together in travel or communication time or costs
endangered language a language that is no longer taught to children by their parents and is not used for everyday conversation
extinct language language without any native speakers
convergence hypothesis cultures blending and becoming more the same
glocalization taking worldly cultural practices to work locally
culture hearth place a trait begins and spreads from
language family Group of languages with a shared but fairly distant origin
dialect a form of language spoken by people in a particular region or group
accent a way to pronounce words, can vary by region

universalizing religion seeks converts
ethnic religion A religion with a relatively concentrated spatial distribution like Hindu and Judaism
proselytic religion that grows through missionary work
toponyms place names
polytheistic believing in many gods
animistic religion the belief that inanimate objects, such as hills, trees, rocks, rivers, etc possess souls
acculturation The adoption of cultural traits, such as language, by one group under the influence of another.
assimilation an ethnic group blends in with the dominant culture, often losing many original traits
transculturation cultural borrowing that occurs when different come into close contact both borrowing and contributing traits
syncretism A blending of two or more religious traditions, creating a new religion
syncretic religion example Sikhism
orthodox religion believes in a "pure" faith, not open to changes or blending
universalizing religion examples Christianity, Islam, Buddhism
Ethnic religion examples Judaism, Hinduism
