Imperialism Vocab

Imperialism the policy of one nation gaining control over other lands and using them to build an empire
Isolationist a person or country that wants to stay out of the political affairs of other countries
Annex to add or take possession of a smaller country
Yellow journalism the publishing of exaggerated or made-up news stories to attract readers and influence their ideas
Foreign policy the way a country deals with other countries
Corollary an addition to a document
Protectorate a country that is partly controlled and protected by a more powerful country
Provisional government temporary government
Empire a group of countries or regions that are controlled by a stronger country
Expansionism policy of extending a nation’s borders
Monroe Doctrine President Monroe’s foreign policy statement that warned European nations to stay out of Latin America
Roosevelt Corollary TR’s addition to the Monroe Doctrine that said Europe couldn’t interfere with Latin America, but the US could (to keep “law & order”)
Domestic policy decisions that a country makes that directly affect the people living within its borders
