Light Energy & Eye

light a type of energy that travels as an electromagnetic wave
electromagnetic spectrum categorizes waves according to their frequency, wavelength, and energy
visible light the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eyes
reflection occurs when light waves bounce off of an object
refraction occurs when light waves bend as they pass from one medium to another
scattering an interaction of light with matter that causes light to change direction
absorption occurs when light waves transfer energy to particles of matter
color portion of the visible spectrum of light that is reflected back from a surface
prism a piece of glass or other transparent material cut with precise angles and plane faces, useful for analyzing and reflecting light
pigment An organic compound that gives a characteristic color to plant or animal tissues and is involved in vital processes
transverse wave a wave in which the vibrating element moves in a direction perpendicular to the direction of advance of the wave; light travels on this wave
pupil the black opening in the middle of the colored part of your eye
cornea the transparent layer forming the front of the eye.
iris the colored part of the eye that surrounds the pupil
lens transparent body situated behind the iris in the eye; its role (along with the cornea) is to focuses light on the retina
optic nerve A nerve at the back of your eye that connects to your brain
