| Literal Language | language that means exactly what is said. |
| Simile | When two things are compared using the words like or as. |
| Idiom | A common phrase where the meaning is figurative, not literal. |
| Metaphor | When two things are being compared directly. |
| Alliteration | When the beginning sounds of words are repeated. |
| Allusion | When the author makes a reference to another popular work that most people know. |
| Hyperbole | An extreme exaggeration. |
| Personification | When animals or non-living objects are given human qualities. |
| Onomatopoeia | Words that describe what a sound is like. |
| Repetition | When words, symbols, or ideas are shown over and over in a text. |
| Foreshadowing | When the author hints at what might happen in the future. |
| Flashback | Part of the story that happened in the past and is being retold through the character's thoughts or explanations. |
