words about major decisions
| Term | Definition |

| atmosphere | a surrounding or pervading mood, environment, or influence --> author uses atmosphere to set mood or tone (ex. gloomy, happy) |
| conflict | the main struggle in the story, the struggle between opposing forces (man vs man, nature, self, society) |
| plot | the sequence of events in a story |
| plot --> exposition | introductory material that provides setting, characters, and creates a tone |
| plot --> rising action | a series of events that builds from the conflict |
| plot --> climax | the highest point of conflict and emotion |
| plot --> falling action | the events after the climax that close the story |
| plot --> denouement | conclusion/resolution of story's plot |
| point of view | the narrator's perspective (ex. first person, third person, etc) |
| rhetoric | the art of speaking/writing effectively --> means of communication or persuasion (ex. speeches) |
| setting | the time and place where the story occurs |
| style | the total of all the choices an author makes concerning words and their arrangements, a way of writing specific to one group or individual (ex. Hemingway's, academic, etc) |
| theme | a unifying/dominant idea in a work of literature |
| tone | encompasses the attitudes towards the subject and toward the audience |
