Chapter 3 Vocab
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Standard Form | a linear equation (Ax + By = C) |
| X-intercept | The x coordinate of a point where the graph crosses the x=ais, it occurs when y=O |
| Y-intercept | The y coordinate of a point where the graph crosses the y-axis, it occurs when x=O |
| Slope | the M of a nonvertical line passing through two points (x,y) and (x2, y2) is the ratio of the rise to the run. |
| Rise | Change in y |
| Run | Change in x |
| Slope intercept form | The slope of a line is m, and the y-intercept of the line is b. |
| Constant function | A linear equation written in the form y = 0x + b or y = b |
| Family of functions | A group of functions with similar characteristics |
| Parent function | The most common family of functions |
| Transformation | A change in size, shape, position or orientation of a graph |
| Reflectiion | A transformation that flips a graph over a line called the line of reflection |
| Translation | The transformation that shifts a graph horizontally or vertically |
| Horizontal shrink | When a > 1, the transformation is a horizontal shrink because the graph shrinks toward the y-axis |
| Horizontal stretch | When 0 < a < 1, the transformation is a horizontal stretch because the graph stretches away from the y-axis. |
| Vertical Shrink | When 0 < a < 1, the transformation is a vertical shrink because the graph shrinks toward the x-axis. In each chase, the x-intercept stays the same. |
| Vertical Stretch | When a > 1, the transformation is a veritcal stretch because the graph stretches away ffrom the x-ais. |
| Absolute value function | A function that contains an expression within absolute value symbols. |
| Vertex | The apex/highest point |
| Vertex form | A quadratic equation used to identify the vertex |
