Vocabulary List

QuestionAnswer
gutter the blank space between panels in a graphic novel
panel one single frame or box that usually contains a single scene or image
splash a single frame on an entire page
spread an image that covers two or more pages
narrator box a text box in which information about the story is shared with the reader
speech bubble shows what a character is saying
thought bubble shows what a character is thinking
emanata symbols like tear drops, sweat drops, question marks, and hearts that help show character emotions
onomatopoeia words that sound like they look
bleed an image that extends beyond the edge of the page
foreground the panel or part of the panel that is closest to the viewer
background the panel or part of the panel that is farthest from the viewer
midground the panel or part of the panel that in between the foreground and the background
captions information in boxes or bubbles that are usually separate from the panel
graphic novel a type of story combining words and images a complete story in comic form presented as a book
