Plate Boundaries

TermDefinition
Plate Tectonics Theory that the lithosphere is divided into tectonic plates that slowly move on top of the asthenosphere.
Convection Currents A cyclical motion occurs because of density differences in the mantle. Hotter rock rises, cooler rock sinks. This motion moves the plates.
Convergent boundary Occurs when two tectonic plates move toward each other and collide.
Divergent boundary The boundary between two tectonic plates moving away from each other.
Transform boundaries Occurs when two tectonic plates slide past each other.
Fault Any fracture or system of fractures in the crust.
Subduction The process in which a denser plate is pushed downward beneath a less dense plate when plates converge; occurs at continental / oceanic boundaries and oceanic / oceanic boundaries.
Trench A deep and narrow depression in the seafloor where the subducted plate moves into the asthenosphere.
Rift valley A low region formed between continental plates on a divergent boundary where the plates separate.
Mid-ocean ridge Underwater mountain range created when magma rises between two tectonic plates at a divergent boundary.
Volcano Forms at some convergent boundaries, both continental/oceanic and oceanic/oceanic
Earthquake A sudden movement of Earth's crust caused by the release of stress accumulated along geologic faults or by volcanic activity.
volcanic island arc A series of volcanoes formed at a subduction zone where oceanic crust and oceanic crust meet at a convergent boundary.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
