Quiz 4

QuestionAnswer
Factors Affecting Climate ~Latitude ~Ocean Currents ~Wind Current and Air Masses ~Elevation ~Relief ~Nearness to water
LATITUDE(Affects on Temperature) 1. Latitude Affects Temps 2. Temps are higher at equator 3. Temps cooler as we move north or south in Latitude
OCEAN CURRENTS(Affect on Climate) 1. Water movement brings cool water to warm areas and warm water to cool areas
OCEAN CURRENTS~3 major oceans currents 1. North Pacific Current(warm) 2. Gulf Stream(warm) 3. Labrador Current (cold)
WIND CURRENT AND AIR MASSES(Affect on Climate) 1. Winds move different air masses around the earth 2. Winds are pressure differences created by convection currents in the atmosphere 3. Air Masses can be DRY or MOIST
ELEVATION 1. Temps DECREASE as we get higher into the atmosphere. 2. As air RISES there is LESS PRESSURE, it EXPANDS and therefore CANNOT hold as much HEAT.
RELIEF 1. Warm air absorbs MORE water than cool air 2. The HIGHER the place is above SEA LEVEL the COLDER it will be. 3. Mountains have MORE rainfall than low areas because the temp on top of mountains is LOWER than the temp at sea level.
NEARNESS to WATER 1. Being close to water affects a location’s temperatures and precipitation. ~London, Ontario’s climate is affected by its proximity to the Great Lakes.
Climate Regions of Canada 1. Cordilleran 2. Prairie 3. Arctic
CORDILLERAN(Characteristics) 1. a wide variety of climate areas 2. climate depends on the area’s position on the mountain
PRAIRIE(Characteristics) 1. Extreme Temperatures (cold winters/hot summers) 2. Very dry
ARCTIC(Characteristics) 1. Frozen Desert(DRY~less than 250 mm of precipitation) 2. Very cold temps
