Rhetorical Devices
A set of rhetorical devices and some examples of them in use

| Diction | word choice |
| Syntax | the arrangement of words and phrases to create a well-formed sentence |
| ethos | demonstrate they are credible and trustworthy ex: automatic or credentials |
| logos | reason by offering clear, rational ideas ex: often uses data/statistics: acknowledges counterargument with concession/refutation |
| pathos | an appeal to emotions, values, desires, and hopes ex: propagandistic, polemical(strong attack): may use images, humor, connotations |
| anaphora | a word/phrase repeated at the beginning of successive sentences ex: when you..., when you..., when you... |
| antithesis | setting 2 terms that juxtapose each other (emphasizes difference/contrast and calls attention) ex: "We must all learn to live together as brothers—or we will all perish together as fools." |
| apodioxis | an emphatic rejection or dismissal ex: rejects it without addressing it |
| chiasmus | repetition of ideas in inverted order X ex: Mankind must put an end to war- or war will put an end to mankind |
| enumeratio | (Figure of amplification in which a subject is divided into constituent parts or details, and may include a listing of causes, effects, problems, etc.) ex: 1.) and then 2.) |
| epistrophe | a word/phrase repeated at the end of successive sentences ex: .... for the people, .. for the people |
| epizeuxis | repetition of words with no others in between ex: never give in, never, never, never, never |
| erotoma | the rhetorical question ex: Are all men created equal? |
| exigence | issue/ problem that causes someone to speak ex: civil rights movement for MLK |
| hypophora | rhetorical question the writer answers ex: Are all men created equal? No.. |
| Antanoclasis | single word is repeated, but in 2 different meanings ex: your argument is sound.... all sound |
| Allusion | historical reference to a person, place, text, or idea ex: adolf hitler and WW2 |
| Alliteration | repeating initial sounds in a series of successive words ex: sandy sold seashells by the seashore |
| Imagery | using words to give a readers a picture in their head ex: the pale moon rose in the dark cloudy night sky |
| Anastrophe | change of normal word order ex: On a black coat sparkle the stars |
| repetition | repeating the same phrases or point |
| rhetoric | the study of how language works to persuade |
| Kairos | the most OPPORTUNE occasion for speech |
| metaphor | comparison without the use of like and as ex: He's a couch potato |
| personification | inanimate objects have human qualities ex: the car sighed |
| paradox | seems self-contradictory, but it turns out to have a rational meaning ex: When I went to jail for the first time, I felt free |
| Sprezzatura | the quality to cultivate |
| tricolon | three parallel elements of the same length in a series ex: be sincere, be brief, be seated |
