Unit 2: Tools of Geometry
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Point | a physical location in space that has no length, width, or depth |
| Line | a set of connected points that extends forever in both directions |
| Line Segment | a portion of a line that has a starting and ending point |
| Ray | a portion of a line that has a starting point and then extends forever in one direction |
| Collinear | points lying one the same line |
| Acute Angle | an angle that has a measure less than 90 degrees |
| Obtuse Angle | an angle that has a measure greater than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees |
| Right Angle | an angle that has a measure of exactly 90 degrees |
| Straight Angle | an angle that has a measure of exactly 180 degrees (also known as a straight line) |
| Adjacent Angles | two non-overlapping angles that share a ray |
| Vertical Angles | pairs of angles that share a vertex and have rays that point in opposite directions (degree measures are equal) |
| Complementary Angles | two angles whose measures add up to 90 degrees |
| Supplementary Angles | two angles whose measures add up to 180 degrees |
| Midpoint | a point that lies exactly in the center or middle of a line segment |
| Bisector | cuts a geometric object into two of the same type of object and have the same measure |
| Perpendicular | describes two lines, segments or rays that form right angles with each other |
| Parallel | two lines that share NO points in common and NEVER intersect |
| Polygon | shapes/figures that are enclosed by straight lines |
| Trapezoid | 4 sided figure with at least one pair of parallel lines |
| Parallelogram | 4 sided figure with exactly two pairs of parallel lines |
| Transversal | a line that crosses through two or more parallel lines |
| Corresponding angles | angles located in the same relative position on the two parallel lines (matching angles) |
| Exterior | outside |
| Interior | inside |
