Figurative Language

QuestionAnswer
What is a simile? A comparison of two unlike things using "like" or "as". Example: I was as calm as a cucumber on the first day of school.
What is a hyperbole? An exaggerated statement. Example: My backpack weighs a ton!
What is an onomatopoeia? A word that imitates the sound it represents. Example: The door slammed. CRASH!
What is personification? Using human qualities to to describe an object or animal. Example: The stars winked in the night sky.
What is alliteration? A repeated consonant sound at the beginning of the word. Example: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
What is a metaphor? A comparison that uses a description that is not literal, using "is", "are", or "was". Example: He was as quiet as a mouse.
What is an idiom? An expression that doesn't mean exactly what the words say. Example: Don't beat around the bush.
What is an allusion? A reference that compares someone or something to a well-known person, place, or event. Example: Don't be a Scrooge!
What is an example of a simile? She sings like an angel.
What is an example of a hyperbole? I've told you this a million times!
What is an example of alliteration? Polly's prancing pony performed perfectly.
What is an example of onomatopoeia? Boom! Pow!
What is an example of personification? Lightning danced across the sky.
What is an example of a metaphor? The classroom was a zoo.
What is an example of allusion? If I stay out too late, I might turn into a pumpkin.
What is an example of an idiom? That test was a piece of cake!
