biodiversity Number and variety of living organisms; diversity of life
catastrophic event or disturbance sudden, natural or man-made situation where change and destruction may occur without prior knowledge or preparation.
climax community a stable, end community of succession - fully grown ecosystem
succession series of changes that an ecosystem experiences during its development
lichens and mosses examples of pioneer species
pioneer species organisms often lichen, that colonize barren rock or lava during primary succession and help develop soil so other organisms may follow.
primary succession This is the type of succession which occurs when the environment becomes void of any life or soil.
secondary succession This is the specific type of succession which occurs after a event that destroys the ecosystem but leaves soil still in place
