Bed Making

After gathering soiled linens into the center of the bed what is the next step? Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene before handling the clean linens
Clean, dry, wrinkle free linens help prevent what? Helps prevent the breakdown of skin and pressure ulcer formation
How can the CNA prevent themselves from back injury while making beds? Raise the bed to working height (around the hips)
How is the pillow placed on the bed? Flat / without pillow case until bed is opened
In an unoccupied room or after discharge the bed is prepared as what type of bed? Closed bed
Making an occupied bed involves doing what? (person addition) Explain what you are doing throughout the procedure, close the door, pull the privacy curtain, keep person covered
What is used to keep wound drainage from soiling the bed linens? A bed protector
When a patient is in a coma how is the bed made? What is important for the CNA to do while making the bed? Still explain the procedure to the person in the coma and talk reassuring like a normal occupied bed making
What would be inappropriate for a patient that has had a stroke to use?
What is used to prevent a person's bed from sagging? A bed board (helps keep the person's body properly aligned)
What is the rationale of using a footboard? Keep the person's feet rested flat against the footboard to help keep the feet in proper alignment (not a lot of muscle control)
How are clean/ soiled linens carried? Away from the body
What is the purpose of a bed cradle? To keep the top sheet, the blanket, and the bedspread away from the person's feet (recovering from burns/ at risk for pressure ulcers)
What type of bed is a bed with the linens fan folded back? An open bed
When is the bed left in an elevated position? When the bed is empty
What type of bed is prepared for a person when arriving on a stretcher? A surgical bed (linens fan-folded to one side of the bed)
What is "good practice" when making a bed in a healthcare facility? -----
When are linens changed? Each time the linens become soiled or excessively wrinkled (based on patients/residents needs) usually done in morning before visiting hours while they are bathing or dressing
When is a bed protector used? Used for people who are incontinent of have draining wounds?
What is the benefit from an air filled pressure relieving mattress? To off set areas that are bony and prevent pressure ulcers (may be placed on top of regular mattress to help prevent skin breakdown in people who must stay in bed for long periods of time)
What is the technique used to prevent the spread of infection when handling soiled linens? Wear gloves, confine the soiled area to the inside of the linens by rolling them toward the center, place in linen hamper
Why is a mitered corner made? To hold the top sheet, blanket, and bedspread in place
Why are routine subjects like bed making important for CNA's to learn? Shows the facility provides capable, competent care / prevents complications
When making an occupied bed what are all the things important to remember? Explain procedure, keep privacy (bath blanket/door/curtain), wear gloves, take off gloves before touching clean linens
How are extra linens stored when you have too many in the room? Must be laundered if entering a room if not leave on clean linen cart
Order of applying linens is... Mattress pad (IN), bottom sheet, draw sheet (IN), bed protector (IN), top sheet, blanket, bedspread, pillowcases
Mattress Pad thick layer of padding that is placed on the mattress to help make it more comfortable and to protect the mattress from moisture and soiling
Draw (Lift) Sheet small flat sheet that is placed over the middle of the bottom sheet covering the area of the bed above the person's shoulders to below their buttock
Bed Protector a square quilted absorbent fabric backed with waterproof material
Bath Blanket lightweight cotton blanket used to provide modesty and warmth during a bed bath or linen change
