9 Chem Reactions
| Term | Definition |

| Law of conservation of mass | atoms are not created or destroyed in a chemical reaction. They can only be rearranged. |
| Chemical Reaction | a rearrangement of atoms, often accompanied by a chemical change |
| Products | chemicals produced in a chemical reaction. They are written on the right-hand side of the arrow. |
| Reactants | chemicals that take part in a chemical reaction. They are written on the left-hand side of the arrow. |
| Word equation | simple written description of what is happening in a reaction |
| Compound | a substance made of 2 or more different atoms |
| Molecule | a substance made from 2 or more atoms |
| Element | a specific type of atom |
| Controlled Variables | Any variable that should not change during an experiment. These variables are kept as constant as possible to ensure the test is fair. |
| Dependent Variable | The variable that responds to the independent variable. The dependent variable is the one being measured in the experiment. |
| Hypothesis | A prediction of whether the independent variable will have an effect on the dependent variable. Prediction of results. |
| Independent Variable | The variable that is compared or changed by the researcher. |
| Qualitative | deals with characteristics. – that pertaining to quality, is the kind of observation where a person observes a certain thing based on its physical qualities or properties. This observation uses all five senses – sight, smell, hearing, touch, and taste. |
| Quantitative | deals with numbers. – that pertaining to quantity, is the kind of observation where a person observes a certain thing based on numbers and measurements. |
