QuestionAnswer
What were the major differences between Athens and Sparta? Athens was a democratic state where education, art, and philosophy was valued. Sparta was a military state where strength, size, and fighting capabilities were most important.
Why is Athens called a democracy? Every citizen could take part in the city's government, laws had to be approved by the assembly, every citizen was part of the assembly, which debated and voted on all laws and to be a part of the council of 500, you must be chosen by a random drawing.
How did Athenians get the goods they needed for their everyday life? Athenians traded with other city-states and some foreign lands to get the goods and natural resources they needed.
How did Athenians educate their children? Boys were taught at home by their mothers or enslaved males until the age of 6 or 7. Then boys went to school until about the age of 14. Girls did not learn to read or write.
How were womens and slaves treated in Athens? Women were not allowed to vote in Athens. Female slaves basically had no rights.
Why was Sparta called an oligarchy? The state was ruled by two hereditary kings of the Agiad and Eurypontid families, both supposedly descendants of Heracles and equal in authority, so that one could not act against the power and political enactments of his colleague.
How did Spartans get the goods they needed for their everyday life? Sparta didn't have enough land to feed all its people, so Spartans took the land they needed from their neighbors. Spartan men spent their lives as warriors, Sparta used slaves and non-citizens to produce needed goods.
How did Spartans educated their children? Spartan children were placed in a military-style education program. At the age of 7, Spartan boys were removed from their parents homes and began the “agoge."
How were women and slaves treated in Sparta? A woman was expected to look after her husband's property in times of war. She also had to guard it against invaders and revolts from slaves. Spartan women had many rights that other Greek women did not have.
