Editorial and Digital Terms

TermDefinitionUse Case
B-roll Footage that isn't the main action, filler footage used to provide context and support the main video footage. Can be filmed but often stock video. Includes establishing scenes (city, landscape, people in a coffee shop, water flowing). Used in video editing. B roll may be found/researched before editing begins.
Cold Proof A proofread performed on already formatted materials where an Editor specifies the intensity of the edits. Example: Speaker deck, CVA, flyer, eblast post-layout.
Indexing Adding website content to a search engine index to make it more "findable." This is considered throughout design - informed by the site map, roughed out in the wireframe, and fully designed at the layout phase, when look and feel are brought to life.
Frame.io Video renders are uploaded to frame.io, which allows for commenting with time stamps. This is how routing & subsequent editing take place. Used for review and version control throughout video editing.
Copy Edit Pre-layout/format of full edit up to the discretion of the editor Examples: Manuscript of content pre-layout, Bios This becomes the “original” for the readback post-layout. Routes only through Copy Services and Editorial at this step.
Motion graphics Animated text or 2D graphics in a video or animation. Done in design & video editing. These add to the cost of a video and are important to discuss with the client up front, including look and feel, number of graphics, etc.
Drop down vs Hamburger Menu DD: When options are needed under a category (for example, when filtering), a user can click on an item and that "drops down" a list of items you can choose from. HB: The three horizontal lines, usually used on mobile, to denote a collapsed menu. Typically needed for mobile - some of the alternate designs needed when making responsive content.
MLR (Med Legal Review) Process by which materials are reviewed by the client team to ensure medical, legal, and regulatory/compliance (FDA) requirements are met. Changes CANNOT be made to content post-MLR/PRC approval. Final content MUST match what is approved by the MLR team. PRC/MAC = promotional review committee/Material Approval Committee (examples of client-specific naming for an MLR review).
Title sequence The set of graphics and text that are animated on screen with the title to introduce a video. Design & video editing. For all creative elements, have conversations early with the client to determine look and feel and be sure it aligns with what was budgeted.

Beta site Also called a "demo" site, this is a sample site that has its own temporary URL and can be tested prior to launching the live site. Beta rollout and testing happens prior to launching live site and is used to test for bugs.
