Setting & POV
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| setting | place and time period in which the story takes place |
| integral setting | essential t the plot; it influences the action, character or theme |
| backdrop setting | relatively unimportant to the plot; featureless curtain or flat painted scenery of a theater |
| point of view | perspective from which a story is told. Depends upon who the narrator is and how much they know. |
| first person | uses -"I" - A character is telling the story |
| second person | uses "you" - The author speaks directly to the reader. seldom used; found most often in nonfiction |
| third person | uses "he," "she," or "it" - The author is telling about the characters. (three kinds) |
| third person limited omniscient | We are told the thoughts and feelings of only one character. |
| third person omniscient | We are told everything about the story, including the thoughts and feelings of all the characters, even information in the author's mind which no character knows. |
| third person dramatic or objective | We are only told what happens and what is said, we do not know any thoughts or feeling of the characters. (includes the words and actions, as in a play) |
