Plot & Conflict

TermDefinition
plot pattern of events in a narrative
exposition introduces characters, setting, and background information
narrative hook usually occurs after the exposition, It is a statement. event, or action that attracts the reader's attention and makes them want to read more.
rising action leads up to the climax. This is where the conflict is introduced.
climax the high point of the story. It is usually most exciting part and is often a turning point for the character(s) and/or the plot
falling action the fall out that occurs after the climax. It is the byproduct of the events that transpired.
resolution the end of the story. Typically, conflicts have been resolves by this point.
conflict internal - person against self
external - person against person pits the protagonist against someone else
external - person against society when the protagonist is in conflict with the values of his or her society
external - person against nature when the protagonist is threatened by an element of nature (storm, famine, earthquake, birth, death)
external - person against supernatural when the protagonist must contend against god or gods, ghosts, or magic
external - person against fate when the protagonist must contend against his or her destiny
