Character
| Term | Definition |

| main character | the character(s) that the story centers around |
| minor character | the one who interacts with the main character and helps the story along |
| protagonist | the central character (Person, animal, or personified object) in the plot's conflict |
| antagonist | in conflict with the protagonist (society, nature. another person, , his self, or fate) |
| character foil | character whose traits are in direct contrast to those of the main character |
| stereotype | character that possesses expected traits of a group rather than being an individual |
| flat character | not fully developed; we know only one side of the character |
| round character | fully developed, with many traits (bad and good shown in the story). We feel that we know the character so well that he/she has become a read person. |
| character development | character appearance, speech and actions, comments of other characters, narrator's comments |
| static character | one who does not experience a basic change during the course of the story |
| dynamic character | one who experiences a change through the events of the story, change is internal and may be sudden, but events of the plot make it inevitable |
