Unit 1 Phase Change
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| solid | A state of matter that has a definite shape and definite volume. The particles vibrate in place due to a strong attractive force |
| liquid | A state of matter that has no definite shape but has a definite volume. The particles slip past each other due to a weaker attractive force, which allows them to take the shape of their container. |
| gas | A state of matter with no definite shape or volume. The particles have a very weak attractive force, and therefore spread out to fill their container. |
| condensation | The change of a substance from a gas to a liquid |
| evaporation | The vaporization (liquid to gas) of a substance from the surface of the liquid at all temperatures. Clue: no bubbles |
| melting | The change of a substance from a solid to a liquid |
| freezing | The change of a substance from a liquid to a solid |
| kinetic energy | The energy that an object has because it is moving |
| molecular attraction | A pull between two molecules that is always the same for a substance |
| phase | A noticeably different form or state of the same substance. |
| temperature | A measure of the average kinetic energy of the molecules of a substance. |
| sublimation | The change in phase of a substance directly from a solid to a gas. |
| deposition | The change in phase of a substance directly from a gas to a solid. |
| plasma | The state of matter that is made up of very hot gas, with electrically charged particles with the most energy. |
| viscosity | A measurement of a liquid’s resistance to flow. |
| surface tension | The elastic force acting on the surface of a liquid caused by the attractive forces of the molecules at the surface. |
| vapor | The gas state of a substance that is normally a solid or liquid at room temperature. |
| Thermal Energy | The sum of the kinetic energy and the potential energy of the particles that make up an object. |
| Boiling | The vaporization (liquid to gas) of a substance from inside the substance at a specific temperature. Clue: bubbles |
