QuestionAnswer
What is a grass farmer? All of the animals on the farm eat grass and depend on grass for food production.
What is the difference between Poky feeders and the cows on Joel's farm? Poky feeders have a longer food chain because they use machines to harvest the feed but the cows on Joel's farm harvest their own feed.
What does Joel mean when he pointed out that "people generally understand that quality costs more, except when it comes to food." (p. 215) People will generally pay more for things like cable, cars, clothing because of the quality but they are not willing to pay more for quality food.
What does it mean to "vote with your fork." (p, 221) People can make changes in the food system through the choices we make buying or consuming food.
What does this mean? "That handful of compost was proof that when grass can eat sunlight and food animals can eat grass, there is indeed a free lunch." (p.195) It means, the natural farming process of grass using sunlight and the animals feed on the grass to produce food cost nothing compared to using machines.
How does Joel Salatin/Polyface farm make money? By raising livestock (beef, chicken, pork, eggs, turkey and rabbits)
How many acres is Polyface Farm? 1000 acres
At Polyface farm, why are the pens floorless? To allow the birds to get the grass
At Polyface farm, why are the pens moved 10 feet each day? To give the chickens twenty-four hours to eat the grass, fertilize it with their droppings, then move them to fresh ground.`
Why does Joel wait 3-4 days before moving the chickens to where the cows have been? It is the chickens manure that fertilizes the grass but if they are left in one place they will destroy the soil because they do not like fresh manure.
Why does Joel think the "eggmobile" will be worth it? Because of the chickens he doesn't treat his cattle with toxic chemicals to get rid of parasites.
Why is Joel not buying more chickens because the eggs bring in more money than anything else? Because it will throw the system off. Too much chicken manure will kill the grass, he will also have to buy more cows for the chickens to get their protein from the larvae in cow pats and he wouldn't have enough grass to feed the cows.
How many cows does Joel have on Polyface farm? 150
