25-26 RLA STAAR Academic Vocabulary

| Poet | the person who wrote the poem |
| key idea | important idea |
| paragraph | A section of the story. These are numbered. |
| infer/inference | To use background knowledge (what you already know) plus text evidence to come up with an answer |
| selection | The WHOLE story |
| central idea | what the story or section is MOSTLY about |
| photograph | A real picture- NOT hand drawn |
| most likely reason | the best reason |
| conclude | synonym for inference- to conclude means to come to a conclusion |
| dictionary entry | A question where you choose the correct definition from four choices. |
| definition | the meaning of a word |
| article | The WHOLE story |
| summary | Stating the main events that happened in the story IN ORDER. |
| Chronologically | Written in order (sequence) |
| poem | Descriptive writing that follows a rhythm, could rhyme but doesn't have to |
| point of view | the perspective from which the events in a story, poem, or play are told (1st or 3rd person) |

| Paraphrase | using different words to say the same idea |
| chronological structure | a type of text structure where the author writes things in order (example: history books are written in chronological order- from beginning to end) |
| author's Purpose | WHY the author wrote the selection Example: To tell facts about school |
| transition | words that are used to combine ideas (examples: however, lastly, in conclusion) |
| combine sentences | put two sentences together into ONE sentence |
| replace | In writing, if you replace a word or sentence, you get rid of something and add something else that sounds better or makes more sense |
| revise | to make changes |
| extended Constructed Response (ECR) | Answering a question using the RACES strategy. This is like writing an essay. R-restate A-answer C-Cite evidence E-explain S-Sum it up (conclusion) |
