24-25 RLA PSTAAR Academic Vocabulary

| phrase | a small group of words together- This is NOT a complete sentence |
| paragraph | A section of the story. These are numbered. |
| Intended audience | chosen reader/ Who the selection was written for |
| Author | The person who wrote the selection |
| dictionary entry | A question where you choose the correct definition from four choices. |
| point of view | the perspective from which the events in a story, poem, or play are told (usually 1st or 3rd person) |
| section | A PART of the story/selection |
| article | The WHOLE story |
| Claim | The main argument |
| poem | descriptive writing |
| Definition | The meaning of a word |
| line (in poetry) | Each row of text is a line |
| most likely reason | the best reason |
| imagery | When the author uses descriptive language to get the reader to picture it in their mind- includes senses (sight, smell, sound, taste, touch) |
| message | what the author wants you to learn or their purpose |
| key idea | important idea |
| conclusion/to conclude | To come to a conclusion-similar to an inference |
| synonym | two words that mean the same thing or are similar (example: cold & chilly) |
| information organized | text structures- the question is asking which text structure was used to organize the story (examples: compare & contrast, cause & effect, sequence, etc.) |
| summary | Stating the main events (key details) that happened in the story IN ORDER. |
| Evidence | Proof from the text where you find the answer |
| Infer | To use background knowledge (what you already know) plus text evidence to come up with an answer (to conclude) |
| Central Idea | What the selection or section is MOSTLY about |
| Extended Constructed Response (ECR) | Answering a question using the RACES strategy. This is like writing an essay. R-restate A-answer C-Cite evidence E-explain S-Sum it up (conclusion) |
| replace | In writing, if you replace a word or sentence, you get rid of something and add something else that sounds better or makes more sense |
| central idea | what the story or section is MOSTLY about |
| transition word | words that are used to combine ideas (examples: however, lastly, in conclusion) |
| combine ideas (in writing) | put two sentences together into ONE sentence |
| clear and effective way | in a way that makes sense |
| introduction | the beginning sentence in a paragraph |
| removed | to take away |
| revise/revision | to make changes in writing |
| Figurative Language | descriptive language used in writing to make the reader feel a certain way or paint a picture in their mind. |
| Differently | Different or not the same |
| Transition Word | A word that is used to connect sentences in writing. Examples: Therefore, As a result, However |
| Cause and Effect Organizational Structure | One of the ways authors organize their writing- stating facts about 'why' something happened and 'what' happened as a result of it. Example: The students studied hard for their test, so they made good grades. |
