| Black Death | A bubonic plague pandemic occurring in Western Eurasia and North Africa from 1346 to 1353. The most fatal pandemic. Killed many Serfs. |
| Foot-Binding | The Chinese custom of breaking and tightly binding the feet of young girls. |
| Indian Ocean Trade Network | A key factor in trade; East-west exchanges throughout history. The prominent religion was Islam. |
| Paper Money | A banknote that was originally created to avoid having to carry thousands of strings of coins. Originated in the late Tang times. |
| House of Wisdom | A center of learning located in Baghdad, associated with the Islamic Empire or the Abbasid Empire. |
| Gothic Cathedrals | Prevalent in Europe from the late 12th to the 16th century during the high and late middle ages. They were built to the glory of god. |
| Jizya | A tax paid by non-muslim populations to their muslim rulers |
| Camel Saddles | A new technology that was put on camels to make long journeys easier. |
| Grand Canal | Connected north and south China, it was buily in 468 BCE and was expanded to assert control |
| Malacca | A port city in modern day Malaysia that was formed around 1400 as a trading center on the Strait of Malacca. (The Srivijaya controlled the strait) |
| Pastoralists | A sheep or cattle farmer; nomads |
| Sufism | Mystical islamic beliefs in which Muslims seek to find the truth about the divine love |
| Filial Piety | exhibiting the proper love and respect for one's parents or elders within the context of Confucianism, buddhism, and daoism ethics |
| Ethiopia | A country in east africa, was important for christian expansion in Africa |
| Caravanserai | Roadside inns that provided shelter, food, and water for caravans, pilgrims, and other travelers. |
| Champa Rice | Rice grown from Vietnam that was very resistant to drought |
| Quanzhou | Alternatively known as Chin-chew. It was an important center for trade, especially during the Tang dynasty. |
| Mansa Musa | The ninth Mansa of the Mali empire. Musa is known for his wealth and generosity. He has been subject to popular claims that he is the wealthiest person in history. |
| Patriarchy | A social system in which positions of dominance are primarily held by men |
| Serfdom | An institutional system which obliged a peasant to provide forced labor in exchange for the ability to occupy land. |
| Buddhism | One of the worlds largest religions- it originiated 2,500 years ago in India. They believed in karma, rebirth, and enlightenment |
| Arabic Numerals | Europeans learned this number system and the ten Arabic numerals. The symbols are the most common for writing numbers |
| Caliphs | In the Islamic empire- they held both religious and governmental power; in the middle east. They were successors of the prophet, Muhammed. The caliph ruled in Baghdad and Egypt. |
| Feudalism | Combination of the legal, economic, military, cultural, and political customs |
| Ibn Battuta | A Maghrebi traveller, explorer and scholar. He wrote one of the world's most famous travel logs- the Rihlah. This by recorded his encounters with many cultures. |
| Monsoons Winds | Winds occurring in the Indian Ocean that could help facilitate trade by moving vessels. |
| Pax Mongolica | Peace of the Mongols, this is when the silk road was protected and there was more trade. During the 13th and 14th centuries. |
| Timbuktu | A city in Mali that's more of prestigious schooling. It was an intellectual and spiritual capital and a center for the propagation of Islam throughout Africa. |
| Luxury Goods | Goods traded that brought a lot of profit for one unit. They were traded along the silk road and included silk, spices, and precious jewls. |
| Swahili Coast | The sight of cultural and commercial exchanges between East Africa and the outside world since at least the 2nd century A.D. |
| Pope | Literally translates to 'further'. The pope is the bishop of rome and thereby the leader of the cultural church. He is also head of the Vatican. |
