DT Plastics IGCSE

TermDescriptionApplication
Nylon Used in clothing and engineering, resistant to abrasion, low friction, and chemicals. Used in mechanical components (gears, bushes, bearings, cams), as rope, fabrics, toothbrush bristles, and weatherproof coatings.
Polyethylene (LDPE and HDPE) LDPE is inexpensive and known as 'polythene,' HDPE is more costly, both have good chemical resistance. Used in bottles, containers, packaging films, electrical insulation, pallets, toys, and bullet-proof vests.
PET Hard, strong, low water absorption, good chemical resistance (except alkalis), and gas barrier properties. Used in signs, drink bottles, and bank/smart cards.
PVC Chemical and solvent resistant, good tensile strength, available in colors, water and fire-resistant. Used in rain, water, and sewage pipes, toys, clothing, footwear, adhesive tapes, medical goods, and packaging.
Acrylic Hard, UV resistant, comes in various colors, transparent sheets more so than glass. Used in bathroom furniture (e.g., baths), aircraft canopies, headlight lenses, signs, and kitchen products.
High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) Common plastic, better impact resistance, poor UV resistance. Used in toys, light fittings, computer cases, buttons, car fittings, freezer/refrigerator linings, and packaging trays.
Polypropylene Highly chemical-resistant, waterproof, flexible, and stress-resistant. Used in chemical containers, carpets (interior and exterior), fuel cans, toys, marine ropes, underwater bearings, dishwasher-safe food containers, and household appliances.
ABS Durable, weather and chemical-resistant, rigid with rubber-like impact resistance. Used in boat/dinghy hulls, domestic appliance housings (e.g., telephones), dashboards, and casings for power and garden tools.
