| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Rate of reaction | Defined as the change in concentration per unit time of any reactant or product. |
| Instantaneous Rate of reaction | the rate of reaction at any one particular time during the reaction. |
| Catalyst | A substance that alters the rate of a chemical reaction but is not consumed in the reaction. |
| Enzyme | A substance that is produced by a living cell and acts as a biological catalyst. |
| Homogenous Catalysis | Catalysis where both the reactants and catalyst are in the same phase. There is no boundary between the two. |
| Heterogenous Catalysis | Catalysis where the reactants and the catalyst are in different stages. There is a boundary between the two. |
| Autocatalysis. | Catalysis where the products of the reactants act as the catalyst. |
| Catalytic convert | The device in the exhaust system of a motor vehicle which contains catalysts to convert pollutants in which the exhaust gases to less harmful substances. |
| Catalyst poison | A substance that makes a catalyst inactive. ie Lead in a catalytic converter. |
| Effective collision | Is a collision that results in the formation of products. |
| Activation energy | The minimum energy that colliding particles must have for a reaction to occur. |
| Reaction Profile Diagram | A graph that shows the change in energy of a chemical reaction with time as the reaction progresses. |
