Unit 3 and 4
lewis dot structures, covalent and ionic bonds, and naming
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chemical Formula | a symbolic representation of its chemical composition |
| Lewis Dot Structure | a very simplified representation of the valence shell electrons in a molecule using chemical symbols, dots, lines, and arrows |
| Octet Rule | the tendency of atoms to prefer to have eight electrons in the valence shell |
| Ionic Bond | bond between metal and nonmetal |
| Covalent Bond | bond between nonmetal and nonmetal |
| Electronegativity | the tendency of an atom to attract an electron; the higher it is the 'greedier' the atom. |
| Oxidation Number | the ionic charge of a compound or atom |
| Valence Electrons | the electrons in the outermost ring of an atom |
| Cations | positively charged ions |
| Anions | negatively charged ions |
| Ion | an atom that has lost or gained electrons and therefore has an electric charge (positive or negative) |
| Polyatomic Ion | An ion that is composed of more than one type of atom |
