| stable | adjective; not likely to give way or overturn; firmly fixed; not likely to change or fail; firmly established; sane and sensible, not easily upset or disturbed |
| dense | adjective; having parts that are close together so that it is difficult to go or see through |
| imprint | verb, impress or stamp (a mark or outline) on a surface or body; to fix permanently (as on the memory); noun, a mark made by pressing something onto a softer substance so that its outline is reproduced |
| rampant | adjective, flourishing or spreading unchecked, especially something unwelcome or unpleasant; getting worse quickly and in an uncontrolled way |
| ration | noun, a fixed amount of something officially allowed to each person during a time of shortage, such as in wartime or during a natural disaster; verb, to allow each person to have only a fixed amount of a particular thing |
| agonize | verb, undergo great mental anguish through worrying about something; cause mental anguish to (someone) |
| deprivation | noun, the damaging lack of material benefits considered to be basic necessities in a society; the lack or denial of something considered to be a necessity (verb form- deprive) |
| vile | adjective, morally bad; wicked; extremely unpleasant |
| dismay | verb, to cause (someone) to feel consternation and distress; noun, consternation and distress, typically that caused by something unexpected |
| gaunt | adjective, (of a person) lean and haggard, especially because of suffering, hunger, or age; (of a building or place) grim or desolate in appearance. |
| simile | comparison of two unlike things using "like" or "as"--- The paper is as light as a feather. The ocean was like a raging bull. |
| metaphor | a direct comparison between two things not usually thought of as being the same or similar---The sea was a raging bull. He is sunshine, brightening our day. |
| personification | giving human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the respresentation of an abstract quality in human form |
| alliteration | the repetition of beginning consonant sounds, often for musical effect that makes the text more interesting and pleasant to read |
| hyperbole | exaggerated statements not meant to be taken literally |
| idiom | a speech form or expression that cannot be fully understood from the individual meaning of its words, such as "in a pickle" |
| onomatopoeia | the use of words to imitate sounds---whir, thud, pow, sizzle |
| symbol | anything that stands for or represents something else. An object that serves as a symbol can have its own meaning but it also represents abstract ideas |
