| refuge | noun, a condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or trouble; something providing shelter |
| refugee | noun, a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster |
| persecute | transitive verb, to harass or punish in a manner designed to injure; to cause to suffer because of belief; to annoy with persistent or urgent attacks or pleas, to pester |
| foundation | noun, an idea or fact that something is based on |
| transition | noun, the process of changing from one state or condition to another; verb, to undergo or cause to undergo such a change |
| bribe | verb, to persuade (someone) to act in one's favor, usually illegally or dishonestly, such as by giving moneyu or a gift; noun, a sum of money or otehr incentive offered or given to bribe someone |
| obscure | adjective; NOT discovered or known about; uncertain; verb, keep from being seen; conceal |
| rugged | adjective, (of ground or terrain) having a broken, rocky, and uneven surface; having or requiring toughness and determination |
| social status | noun, a person's standing or importance in relation to other people within a society |
| sponsor | noun, an individual or organization that pays some or all of the costs involved in staging a sporting or artistic event in return for advertising; verb, to provide funds for a project or activity or the person carrying it out |
| plot | the chain of events that make up a story |
| conflict | the struggle or problem in a story |
| cliffhanger | an ending that leaves the reader in suspense, anxious and uncertain about what will happen next |
| flashback | a section of a story that interrupts the sequence of events to relate to an event from an earlier time |
| exposition | the first part of the plot- introduces setting, characters, and basic situation (background information) |
| inciting incident (event) | moves the reader from the exposition to the rising action- usually introduces the central conflict |
| rising action | most of the events in a story are part of the rising action- the conflict and characters are developed in this section |
| climax | a high point of interest or suspense- usually occurs near the end of the story (fate of the protagonist is often decided) |
| falling action | events after the climax that move the reader toward the resolution |
| resolution (denouement) | part of the plot in which a general insight is often made clear to the reader and loose ends are tied up |
| second person point of view | the narrator uses the pronoun "you" - awkward and rarely used |
| first person point of view | narrator is a character in the story- narrator uses "I"- reader only gets narrator's perspective |
| third person point of view | narrator is outside of the action- uses "he" "she" "they" |
| limited third person | narrator only reveals thoughts, feelings, perspectives of one character |
| omniscient third person | narrator knows and reveals the thoughts and feelings of all of the characters- great for character development |
| Objective third person | narrator tells the story without describing any character's thoughts, opinions, or feelings- objective and unbiased point of view |
| perspective | a way of looking at something shaped by a person's culture, traits, and personal experiences (literary tool- lens) |
| purpose | this is WHY the author has chosen to write the text - theme or PIE |
| character | a person or animal who takes part in the action of a piece of literature |
| protagonist | the main character in a literary work- usually the one the reader wants to succeed |
| antihero | a major character (usually protagonist) who lacks nobility and who struggles for values (a "bad" good guy) |
| antagonist | the character in conflict with the main character- usually the character the reader wants to see defeated |
