Bones and Osteons

Osteo prefix meaning bone
Long Bones bones that move us and make red and white blood cells
short bones bones shaped mainly as cubes and contain mostly spongey bone
flat bones Bone composed of thin layer of spongey bone between two layers of compact bones (skull and ribs)
irregular bones Bone that is mostly spongey bone covered in compact bone (vertebrae)
Diaphysis shaft of a long bone
epiphysis ends of a long bone
epiphyseal line growth plate and fusion between epiphysis and metaphysis
metaphysis region where epiphysis joins diaphysis
medullary cavity space that contains red bone marrow and yellow bone marrow
yellow bone marrow stores fat and found in medullary cavity
periosteum connective tissue that surrounds all bones
articular cartilage covers epiphysis and allows for movement in bones
spongey bone bone that is lighter and less dense
trabeculae partitions formed by columns of connective tissue
red bone marrow spongey tissue in bones that makes RBC-found in flat bones and epiphyseal ends of long bones
compact bone (cortical bone) forms outside hard/dense layer of bones
osteon cylindrical tunnels in central canal formed by osteoclast-rich tissue
Haversian Canal tubes in the cortical bones that house nerves
Osteocyte specialized cells that help make compact bone
osteoblast create new bone tissue
osteoclast break down damaged bone tissue (release acid to break down calcium)
canaliculi radiate from the lacunae to the osteonic (haversian) canal to provide passageways through the hard matrix
lamellae Bony concentric layers surrounding the haversian canals in bone
endosteum lines the internal cavities of bones
lacunae small cavities containing osteocytes
arterioles small branch of artery leading to capillaries
venuoles smallest veins that recieve blood from capillaries
