| Long Bone | a bone that has a shaft and 2 ends and is longer than it is wide Arms, Legs, Hands |
| Short Bones | shaped roughly as a cube and contain mostly spongy bone wrist and ankle (carpal bone) |
| Flat Bones | made up of a layer of spongy bone between two thin layers of compact bone (pariental bone), ribs, skull, NOT MANDIBLE |
| Irregular Bone | the thin layer of compact bone covers a mass of mostly spongy bone (pelvis, vertebrae, mandible |
| Diaphysis | the main or midsection (shaft) of a long bone |
| Epiphysis | he end of a long bone, initially separated from the shaft (diaphysis) by a section of cartilage that eventually ossifies so that the two portions fuse together |
| Epiphysis Line | an epiphyseal plate that has become ossified |
| Metaphysis | the region where the epiphysis joins the diaphysis |
| Medullary Cavity | the hollow part of bone that contains bone marrow |
| Yellow Bone Marrow | produces fat, cartilage, and bone |
| Periosteum | the outside your bones that supplies them with blood, nerves and the cells that help them grow and heal |
| Articular Cartilage | a highly specialized connective tissue of diarthrodial joints. |
| Spongy Bone | lighter and less dense than compact bone |
| Trabeculae | Trabeculae are small, microscopic strands of connective tissue that support or anchor parts of a body or organ |
| Red Bone Marrow | a jelly-like substance that represents the hematopoietically active unit of bone marrow |
| Compact Bone | cortical bone, is a hard, solid tissue that forms the outer layer of all bones |
| Osteon | the basic structural and functional units of compact bone |
| Havesian Canal | a series of tubes around narrow channels formed by lamellae |
| Osteocyte | a cell that lies within the substance of fully formed bone |
| Osteoblast | create new bone tissue |
| Osteoclast | break down damaged bone tissue and releases acid |
| Canaliculi | a small canal or duct or passageway in the body |
| Lamellae | a thin layer, membrane, or plate of tissue ex. respiratory organs |
| Endosteum | thin layer of connective tissue that lines the inside of bones |
| Lacuna | a small cavity that contains a bone cell (osteocyte) or cartilage cell (chondrocyte) |
| Blood vessels | tubular organs found within other organs |
| Arterioles | small blood vessels that carry blood away from your heart, are connectors between your arteries and capillaries |
| Venules | the smallest veins that drain blood from capillaries within the microvascular bed, channeling it into larger veins |
