Algebra Fundamentals

Vocabulary for Fundamentals

TermDefinition
Term Single numbers, variables or combination seperated by an addition or subtraction sign.
Coefficient The number placed in front of the variable in an algebraic expression or equation.
Base A number that is raised to a certain power or the number that is multiplied by itself.
Expression A statement having minimum of two numbers, or variables, or both and an operation sign
Constant A constant is a number on its own.
Perimeter The distance around a two-dimensional shape. Like a fence around something.
Combine Like Terms (CLT) Terms with variables raised to the same power.
Inequality Compares two values, showing if one is less than, greater than, or simply not equal to another value.
Equation The values of two mathematical expressions are equal (indicated by the sign =)
Distributive Property Allows you to multiply a single term and two terms inside of a set of parentheses.
