| short story | brief (or short) work of fiction |
| novel | long work of fiction (a book’s length) |
| nonfiction | gives facts about real people, places or events and discusses ideas about the real world |
| literary nonfiction | Uses some of the same storytelling techniques as fiction to make factual writing come alive |
| plot | the sequence of imagined events in a story |
| characters | imaginary people or animals in a story |
| conflict | a problem or struggle between opposing forces in a story |
| imagery | descriptive language that paints a picture with words |
| mood | a general feeling of a text conveyed by words |
| suspense | a literary device that keeps the reader wondering what will happen next |
| point of view | the perspective from which a story is told |
| theme | a message or insight about life found in fiction |
| functional text | a type of nonfiction that gives practical information (such as directions or a recipe) |
| central idea | a key point the author wants to make |
| topic sentence | found at the beginning of a paragraph and tells the main idea of that paragraph |
| author's purpose | an author’s main reason for writing |
