| Imagery | involves using words and phrases that appeal to a reader's senses of sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. |
| Dilemma | an author might put a character in a position where a choice must be made. Often both choices might have bad consequences but the character must still choose one |
| Cliffhanger | a situation where the outcome is suspenseful uncertain up to the very last moment. |
