Scientific Method
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| scientific method | a systematic approach to solve a problem |
| observation | using the 5 senses to collect information or data |
| inference | drawing conclusion of what happened or will happen based on observations |
| qualitative data | describable data based on qualities (color, size, shape) collected by using your senses |
| quantitative data | measurable data (includes numbers) |
| hypothesis | a TESTABLE explanation for an observed phenomenon |
| conclusion | end result; data and observations are included from the experiment, does your conclusion support or refute your claim and or hypothesis |
| analysis | examine data and summarize it |
| Independent variable | 1 variable that the experimenter changes, is found in the question or problem, is tested (the cause) |
| dependent variable | what is being measured in an experiment, the data collected and changes in response to the independent variable |
| control group | receives no treatment (no change, no independent variable) |
| controlled variables or constants | variables or factors in the experiment that stay the same and are not changed |
| evidence | specific data from the change (stimulus) |
| reasoning | biological explanation of why the data supports the claim |
| claim | a statement that answers a question |
| sources of error | are not mistakes but limitations of the experimental design or measurement tools that may affect the accuracy of the results |
| prediction | a statement about what will happen in the future based on current evidence |
| constraints | limitations or restrictions that must be considered when designing solutions to a problem. Including costs, materials, times environmental impact and societal needs |
| criteria | specific requirements that a solution must meet to be considered successful |
| precision | how close a series of measurements are to one another |
| accuracy | a measure of how close a measurement is to the correct or accepted value of the quantity being measured |
| conduct an investigation | students actively design and carry out a structured test, experiment, or field study to gather data and build evidence. |
| phenomena | observable events that happen in the universe and can be explained or predicted using scientific knowledge. |
