Map Skills Vocab

QuestionAnswer
map scale The relationship between the distance on a map and the real distance on Earth.
compass rose A small graphic on a map showing intermediate and cardinal directions.
intermediate directions The directions located between the main directions on a map or globe NW- northwest, SW-southwest, E- northeast and SE-southeast on a compass rose
cardinal directions The 4 main directions on a map or globe (N-north, S-south, E-east, W-west)
relative location Tells us the location of a place using other surrounding places, or by using cardinal directions
absolute location Tells us exactly where something is located using an address or specific coordinates
legend/map key A table on a map that lists and explains the symbols used
equator an imaginary line that divides the Earth into hemispheres
globe A model of the earth
