Vocabulary Terms-American Government
| Term | Definition |

| Separation of Powers | a doctrine of constitutional law under which the three branches of government (executive, legislative, and judicial) are kept separate |
| Checks and Balances | a system that allows each branch of a government to amend or veto acts of another branch so as to prevent any one branch from having too much power |
| Veto | to refuse to admit or approve |
| Judicial Review | gives the Supreme Court and federal courts the authority to interpret the Constitution. |
| Amendment | a change or addition to the terms of a contract or document |
| Ratification | the official way to confirm something, usually by vote. |
| Bill of Rights | the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution |
| Treaty | agreements among and between nations |
| Electoral College | the group of people (electors) chosen from each state and the district of Columbia to formally select the President and Vice President. |
| Cabinet | the body responsible for the day-to-day management of the government and response to sudden events |
